Abstract:
These data are from the Montana County Boundary geodatabase that was available on the Montana State Library web site on July 1, 2013. Apparently the data had not been modified since October 2009. The 2012 archive of the data included feature classes for the boundaries of the State of Montana and the portion of Yellowstone National Park in Montana that are not in this archive. The Montana boundary is archived separately for 2013.

The data were created to be coincident with the Montana Cadastral Parcel Boundaries. Where county boundaries are coincident with public land survey section lines, they were copied from the BLM's Geographic Coordinate Database (GCDB). If boundaries were not coincident with GCDB lines, they were digitized on screen from 1:24,000 scale Geological Survey Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs). County Boundaries will change as the GCDB is adjusted by the BLM and those data are imported into the Cadastral Data Model. These data were adjusted to the newest GCDB: 10/05/09.

The archived geodatabase contains two feature classes. The County feature class contains the county polygons with attribute information about the counties. The CountyLine layer contains the county boundaries with attribute information about the source of the boundary.

Process step:
County boundaries when coincident with the PLSS were copied from origianl GCDB data downloaded from the Montana State BLM Office. Based on recent observations, this GCDB data varies somewhat from what is available at the Denver GCDB LSIS site and BLM needs to coordinate to ensure one standard version of GCDB. The boundaries that are not coincident with PLSSS, rivers and other topographic features, were on screen digitized from the USGS rastergraphics. Discrepencies were researched when encountered, howverer this is not meant to represent a legal survey of Montana county boundaries
